The rapid development of AI tools is changing the situation on the battlefields of major global conflicts. Experts are drawing attention to the deployment of breakthrough technologies in connection with the wars in Gaza and Ukraine. There are concerns that the consequences may primarily affect civilians. How will humanity react to the swift technological advancements on the battlegrounds? Can it address pressing questions of responsibility, transparency, biases, and even risks to human existence itself?

The conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza are becoming a laboratory for the use of artificial intelligence in warfare, warns Jessica Dorsey, professor of international law at Utrecht University, in the 5:59 podcast.

„AI being used in warfare has been called the most significant fundamental change in the character of war ever recorded in history. So this is a big deal. The developments that are happening now are really monumental,“ says Dorsey, who as a human rights and international humanitarian law scholar has long been involved in the research of questions posed by the use of the military AI applications.

As an example of the use of AI in warfare, she cites the facial recognition technology that people use in everyday life to unlock their smartphones, for example, to target specific targets on the battlefield.

In Gaza, through a system called Gospel the AI can identify up to a hundred targets in a single day that can be destroyed, according to Dorsey. Previously, without the help of AI, it was about 50 targets a year.

Speed and scale are some of the strengths of AI that can make our everyday lives easier, notes professor Dorsey. But in war, she warns, speed can affect decision making. „And when it comes to people's lives, we should have higher standards,“ says Jessica Dorsey, professor of international law at Utrecht University.

How does the use of AI in warfare impact civilian populations? What role does transparency play in ensuring accountability and responsible use of AI in military applications? And is there a risk of a potential arms race? How can the international community mitigate it? Listen to the audio at the top of the article.
