US President Donald Trump continues to defend Washington’s shift in policy towards Moscow. In recent weeks, he has announced a deal to import Russian diesel, suspended sanctions against Russia, and called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to step down. Could these moves strengthen Moscow? We discuss it with Harvard economist Oleg Itskhoki in today’s episode of 5:59.

The deal between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, whose announcement two weeks ago heightened tensions between the United States and Ukraine, is now being put into practice. According to a statement made by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak, the first tanker carrying diesel fuel for the United States was due to leave port on Thursday. „This tanker has a capacity of 40 000 tonnes. And of course, more will follow,“ Novak said, according to the Interfax news agency.

The White House chief has agreed with Putin on supplies of Russian diesel fuel despite the Western sanctions that have already entered into force. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy - and he is not alone among European leaders - has expressed concerns that this is merely the beginning of a relaxation of restrictions. Those restrictions were imposed in an effort to put pressure on Russia, make its aggression against Ukraine more costly, and force Putin’s regime to end the war.

Yet Donald Trump’s actions are clearly calling that effort into question. „The reason this war lasts forever is that Vladimir Putin constantly receives signals that things might be brighter for him in the future,“ says Oleg Itskhoki, a professor of economics at Harvard University.

Are sanctions still working? How long can Russia afford to continue its war against Ukraine? And what do Trump’s economic policies mean for the future of global trade? These are just some of the questions professor Oleg Itskhoki addresses in the 5:59 podcast. You can listen to the full interview in the audio player in the article.
